Perhaps one of the worst films in recent years “Our Family Wedding” is an unfunny, dim-witted wedding comedy that merits no rewarding qualities by any means whatsoever. In the film Academy Award winning actor Forrest Whitaker and comedian Carlos Mencia star as Brad Boyd and Miguel Ramirez two self-righteous fathers who finds their entire lives turned upside down after they find out their children, played by Lance Gross and America Ferra, are getting married. After news of the engagement the two projected in-laws find themselves biting at each other throats. Soon however they learn that they must set aside their personal differences in spite of their children’s expectant union.

Directed by Rick Famuyiwa, who helmed such urban dramas as “Brown Sugar” and “The Wood” has directed something that I would perhaps describe as a new low. It’s hard to imagine this film being considered a good idea by anyone considering its terrible acting, writing and sadly directing taking into consideration both of [Rick] Famuyiwa’s previous directing offerings were not the worst films imaginable. Perhaps it was the approach taken by the filmmakers in finding comedic value in a wedding feature that looked at racial differences which in today’s society can be a touchy subject if not handled with care.

Low and behold what I believe to be the worst part of the film was (and before anything else) was seeing Forrest Whitaker take on such a film project. Here is an actor whose seasoned career hit new heights when he won the Best Actor OSCAR in 2006 for “The Last King of Scotland.” One would think after winning the OSCAR for such a performance at that he would be offered roles that truly showcased his limitless talent; instead he is left starring in garbage like this. The same could be said about [Carlos] Mencia but in all fairness he was already terrible in the first place…if one were to see his standup or his onetime sketch show they would unanimously also agree.

When it comes to a comedy though there is a lot more than just the acting that makes a film of the comedy variety work and that is its writing which in this film was downright ludicrous. Everything from the dialogue to the situations of the characters was terrible. One such illustration of an plot occurrence that was supposed to be funny but wasn’t was a scene that involved a goat consuming Viagra. Obviously you the reader can assume what happened next…here’s a hint the goat became rather licentious.

“Our Family Wedding” altogether didn’t work and by all means wasn’t at all praiseworthy by any real worth. The film exemplifies a great deal of nothingness which further showcases it as a film that could go down as one of the worst movies ever produced about the craziness that comes with matrimonial bliss.
