Over the years up and comer Michael Cera has certainly established himself a comedy talent worthy of praise and observation. Taking into account his great performances in the films “Superbad,” “Juno” and let’s not forget the award winning series “Arrested Development” it’s comprehensible that [Michael] Cera knows what he is doing in terms of giving audiences a good laugh but none of his projects up to now have truly shown his great range than that of “Youth in Revolt.”
An irreligious and inimitably disquieting romantic-comedy “Youth in Revolt” introduces audiences to Nick Twisp (Michael Cera), a sophisticated teenager whose mundane existence suddenly becomes stimulating after he meets and ultimately falls in love with the beautiful Sheeni Saunders (Portia Doubleday). Nick finds everything in his life suddenly fulfilling and he firmly believes that Sheeni is what will complete his entirely; however, that is until he finds out she has a boyfriend. In a desperate effort to win her heart and prove his impertinence Nick creates an alter ego in the shape of Francois Dillinger, a suave and self-assured Frenchman, also played by [Michael] Cera. Nick soon discovers however that his alter ego conception might be more precarious than he imagined after his continuous efforts to win Sheeni’s heart gets him in trouble with the law.
Taking advantage of the film’s original source material, a the C.D. Payne written novel of the same name, “Youth in Revolt” is a no holds barred comedy with plenty of attitude. Michael Cera’s in your face crude performance as Francois Dillinger is relentlessly funny and one performance that alone will make audiences see his true acting potential. Further complimenting Michael Cera recital are those supporting performances from such seasoned players including Zach Galifianakis, Fred Willard, Justin Long, M. Emmet Walsh, Adhir Kalyan, Fred Willard, Ray Liotta, Jean Smart and Steve Buscemi, who as always steals every scene he is in.
Far funnier than any comedy audiences will likely come across today, considering today’s tired Hollywood scheme “Youth in Revolt” brings audiences an account of romance that’s both perverse and downright genius. Thanks in part to the films stylishly fresh transitioning and some remarkable performances, which essentially fuel the film, “Youth in Revolt” is a winning comedy surely to entertain and charm the romantic in all us.
